Real Rubio Rioja Crianza 2013

Crianza is like saying reserve in the US. According to Spanish wine making law, in order to name a wine Crianza the wine must be aged in wood for a minimum of 12 months. That’s something you only find in $75 and up reserve wines here in CA. Although this wine maker identifies this as a typical Rioja Crianza wine, it's far from typical.

The story of Viñedos Real Rubio began over one hundred years ago at the hands of the great grandparents of the current wine makers, who began grape growing in plots around Monte Yerga in the region of Rioja. Their vineyards are home to most of the official varieties of the Rioja Designation of Origin: Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, Viura, Verdejo. In addition, they have vines over 60 years old alongside other younger ones less than a decade old. For Real Rubio, wine and the vineyards constitute a way of understanding life which goes way beyond the mere act of growing and making wines, something they have tried to capture in the winery.

Tasting notes:  The Graciano grape combined with the classic Tempranillo gives this wine lively colors and solid acidity. On the nose, the French oak mingles with the red berries and vanilla. Potent in the mouth, long on the palate with pleasant, ripe tannin which completes the harmony of the wine.
